Onboard Life

The Scholarship is a transnational learning community that acquires skills and experience through:

  • classroom learning
  • shared living and common experiences
  • social activities
  • student groups and affiliations

The academic teaching staff are ably assisted by a group of Residential Intercultural Counsellors (IRCs). They assist by :

  • creating and nurturing a residential community

  • leading activities that aid Intercultural development

  • in the organisation of student groups and affiliations
participating in the Shore Program as well as the pre-briefing and de-briefing programs

The Perspective Series

At each port of call, the Scholarship hosts experts, leaders and artists who give formal lectures or deliver artistic performances. This is done to achieve increased understanding of the countries being visited.

Scholarship Programm

Shore Program

Each port of call provides students with a variety of educational experiences. There are three elements to this program.

Academic Field Programs

Academic field programs are fully integrated into the academic program and participation in three field programs is compulsory and is included in the program fee.

Shore Excursions

Students participating in this program receive assignments to complete while they travel and observe. Back onboard, students participate in debriefing discussions as part of a group.

Independent travel

Students travel on their own and the cost of this program is not included in the program fee. The assessment is similar to the Shore Excursions program.

Assessment

The assessment is semester long and the assessment tool is the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI).

Scholarship Voyages

Voyages

The voyages encompass a 16-week journey that commences twice yearly in January and September. The itineraries are planned keeping the shore programs in mind for all students.

Each voyage pays visit to eight ports of call in which students have the option of shore excursions or independent travel. The following requirements are also kept in mind:

  • Health and Safety issues at each port of call and the destination route
Each destination must demonstrate ample opportunities for development of the shore programs
  • Points of embarkation and de embarkation must be easily accessible by air
  • Community members are fully informed of policies and procedures
  • Adequate time is devoted to the final leg of the journey in order to bring closure to the various programs and activities

Scholarship Students

Our students

Our students form part of a transnational learning community. The three integral components of this program are classroom learning, experiential learning and residential activities.
The student experiences learning while visiting all five continents during a 16-week semester. Learning onboard is combined with traditional academic learning to form a unique program. The program is a also the first step towards preparing the leaders of tomorrow for a truly globalized world.

The Scholarship is for students who :

  • are keen to form part of a transnational learning community
  • want to explore different perspectives

Scholarship Assessment

This helps to gauge the level of acquired intercultural ability as well as the overall effectiveness of the program.

This form of assessment is used as a quality control mechanism to ensure superior learning outcomes for all students.
