Darwin, the Northern Territory’s capital city, lies closer to Asia than to any other Australian capital city. Darwin is a vibrant, tropical city that offers a relaxed outdoor lifestyle. A multicultural city, people from more than 60 different nationalities call Darwin home, including the Larrakia Aboriginal people.
If visiting Darwin, a trip to nearby Kakadu National Park is a must. Kakadu National park is rich in culture and offers beautiful scenery and a wide array of wildlife. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the park is owned in part by the Australian national government and in part by the local Aboriginal people, some of who still live there. With beautiful rock formations, cascading waterfalls, green wetlands, an array of wildlife and aboriginal rock art, visiting Kakadu National Park is an adventure.
Roughly 1500km south of Darwin is Alice Springs, the Northern Territory’s second largest town. This friendly desert town, is not only surrounded by fine, red sands but also refreshing waterholes, remarkable gum trees, an array of wildlife and even an emerald green golf course. The area offers wonderful hiking trails, a chance for wildlife watching, desert safaris and even Outback Ballooning. The people of this town are welcoming to all visitors.
440 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs is the world famous Uluru/Ayers Rock. The welcoming Anangu Aboriginal people are the traditional landowners of this area and both Uluru and nearby Kata Tjuta hold great cultural importance to them. Proud of their heritage, the Anangu people lead walking tours around Uluru, and the surrounding area, offering a wealth of knowledge about the local flora and fauna, bush foods and Aboriginal Dreamtime stories.
